Assistant in the New Territory, at a salary of $100 a month.

Mr. Ho has continuously resided in the New Territory for about two and a half years, and has given satisfaction in the performance of his duties. I am advised, however, that it will be conducive to the efficiency of this branch of the Medical Service of the Colony if Mr. Ho can from time to time come into Hongkong, in order that he may gain wider and more varied medical experience than he has opportunity for in the New Territory. It is, therefore, probable that in the near future it may be found desirable to bring Mr. Ho into Hongkong to perform work similar to that for which Mr. Lan has been engaged, and to send Mr. Lan for a few months to the New Territory to continue the work of Mr. Ho.

3.

As these two Medical Officers will, therefore, be brought into intimate association with one another's work, I am of opinion that the longer service and wider experience of Mr. Ho fully entitle him to a small increase of salary. At present Mr. Ho draws the same pay, $100 a month, which he drew when he was first appointed in 1899; and Mr. Lan, who has only just completed his course of study, will draw a like amount. I recommend for your favourable consideration, therefore, that Mr. Ho's pay should be increased from the 1st instant to $120 a month.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient

Humble servant,

M.J. Gascoigne

Major-General,

Administering the Government.
